Children's Playspaces and Equipment

Children's Playspaces and EquipmentCSA Z614-07 is intended to promote and encourage the provision and use of playspaces that are well designed, well-maintained, innovative, and challenging, and, in so doing, contribute to the development of healthy children in the broadest sense of the word. Research* done by Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children found that school playgrounds that had been upgraded to the CSA Standard experienced 49% fewer injuries compared with schools with equipment that had not yet been upgraded.

The Standard applies to playspaces and play equipment for public use in areas such as schools, parks, child-care facilities, multiple-family dwellings, restaurants, and more. It contains recommendations on technical requirements and practices applicable to the design, manufacture/construction, installation, maintenance, and inspection. The newest edition also includes guidance on how to design playspaces to be more inclusive for children with disabilities.
