New energy structure announced
CSA's energy program has been realigned to foster collaboration, improve efficiency and respond to emerging market needs. Programs for fuel-burning and distribution equipment in Canada and the U.S. have been grouped together under the direction of Greg Orloff, who has joined CSA Standards as Director, Energy, Fuel Burning & Distribution Equipment, and was previously with OnSpeX. This move enables CSA to take a more North American approach to an industry that is increasingly aligned along a north-south axis. Stephen Brown, Director, Energy Sector has responsibility for electrical generation, distribution and equipment also for North America – where many standards are harmonized while accommodating national differences. His portfolio also includes energy efficiency and renewables. Overall, this restructuring will help align these standards program areas with our customer and member needs.

Nanotechnology opens new frontier
Smaller than bacteria or virus cells, nanoscale materials, components and devices are becoming big business. With huge potential in electronic, material, transportation, energy, medical and other applications, nanomaterials are finding their way into everything from fibre optics, fuel additives and food packaging to tires, textiles and tennis rackets. How do we help ensure the maximum potential of this technology is harnessed, while making sure that social, ethical and safety considerations are properly addressed? Through standards. Work is well underway on a global basis, with Canada and CSA taking leading roles. And, as a CSA member, you could have a lasting impact on this emerging field. Read More »

Managing Canada's woodlots
Contributor: CSA Member, Tony Rotherham Comprising 402 million hectares (ha), Canada's national forest area is the third largest in the world, right behind those of Russia and Brazil. While most of this land is publicly owned, the 11% that lies in private hands is critically important to Canada's social and economic well-being. CSA published CSA Z809 a sustainable forest management standard designed for large forest management areas in 1996. Since then, 65 million ha have been certified to this standard. Now, in a milestone achievement for sustainable forest management in Canada, 53 private woodlots covering 4,250 ha of Nova Scotia's forests have been audited and certified to the new CSA Z804 standard for woodlots and small-area forests. Their story illustrates the importance of standards in resource management. Read More »
