Canadian Standards Associations (CSA) offers a large portfolio of energy-related standards that address safety, performance and efficiency requirements from the production facility, through transmission, to the point of use by consumers.
CSA’s suite of Energy codes and standards include: design and installation requirements for renewable energy systems such as solar, wind and photovoltaic; distribution and grid interconnection of wind, solar, biomass, fuel cells and other alternative energies; and performance and energy efficiency of electrical equipment and appliances.
CSA's Energy program encompasses these four categories:
- Performance and energy efficiency of electrical equipment and appliances, as well as the design and installation requirements for renewable energy sources such as wind turbines, solar photovoltaic, solar hot water, earth energy systems, heat metering to support district heating and distributed generation
- Fire safety and fuel burning equipment, including oil and wood-fired appliances
- Nuclear , which specifies world wide requirements for the design, construction, monitoring and inspection of CANDU TM nuclear power plants
- Oil and gas systems and materials for oil and gas pipelines, underground hydrocarbon storage and liquid natural gas facilities
CSA has been developing energy efficiency standards for the past 30 years. These standards have supported the Energuide™ and ENERGY STAR™ programs, which have influenced the behaviours of manufacturers and consumers with dramatic results.
From 1992 to 2005, the collaborative efforts of CSA, manufacturers and governments to promote the use of energy efficient appliances resulted in energy savings equivalent to what 845,000*+ Canadian households consume in a year.
CSA has developed and continues to update more than a dozen standards covering design and installation requirements for renewable energy systems.
