Toronto, August 23, 2010 – CSA Standards, a leading standards-based solutions organization, today announces that the Standards Council of Canada (SCC) will officially recognize CSA Standards' B51 Technical Committee (TC) on Boilers, Pressure Vessels and Pressure Piping Code with their Special Achievement Award. The award, which will be presented in Ottawa on October 14, 2010 as part of the SCC's World Standards Day celebrations, recognizes notable contributions made by a committee in support of Canada's National Standards System. Notable contributions may include the development or completion of a national or international standard or action.
"This announcement marks the first time a CSA Standards Technical Committee has received such a prestigious award and CSA Standards would like to express its sincere thanks to the Standards Council of Canada for this exceptional honour," says Bonnie Rose, President, CSA Standards. "The B51 Technical Committee on Boilers, Pressure Vessels and Pressure Piping Code has actively developed and maintained 17 editions of the Code since it was created more than 70 years ago to help ensure a national safety standard for boilers and pressure vessels based on inter-provincial regulations, facilitating trade and improving safety nationwide. The Technical Committee has constantly endeavoured to ensure that every edition has continuously reflected new technologies and current industry practices."
The B51 TC has achieved significant contributions to standards development in recent times, including being the first technical committee worldwide to publish technical requirements for hydrogen fuel tanks for automotive vehicles, and publishing technical requirements for natural gas fuel tanks for automotive vehicles which became the basis for the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards that followed. Such international recognition by the ISO is a stepping stone towards facilitating worldwide trade and improving safety.
The B51 TC developed and maintains the Code to promote safe construction and operation of boilers and pressure vessels, as well as facilitates the adoption of uniform requirements by Canadian jurisdictions. Membership of the B51 TC comprises of 60 technical professionals from across Canada representing diverse interests including manufacturers, users, regulators and others. Canada's 13 provinces and territories are represented on the technical committee and the B51 Code is referenced in provincial and territorial safety regulations throughout Canada. The B51 Code is harmonized with ISO TC 11, Boilers and Pressure Vessels through an active Canadian Advisory Committee (CAC).
The 2010 SCC Awards are presented biennially in recognition of notable individual and organizational contributions to voluntary standardization and conformity assessment.
